National Convention
Conventions in America are time-honored customs. Just as our forefathers met to deliberate the common good, so have members of SSS assembled periodically to examine their chosen paths and cut new roads for the future. Early in our history, following democratic procedures, our leaders called Conventions.
Records of these early meetings have been preserved in the Sorority Archives at Walton House. Conventions have also been reported in detail in The Triangle since 1905. The accounts offer just a flavor of each event.
Appropriately, the first general convention met in Farmville, the founding place. From 1902-1909, annual conventions were held; from 1911-1913, biennial; since 1936 triennial conventions have been scheduled.
Then, as now, serious work characterized the business meetings. Always, however, there was generous allotment of time for pure fun and enjoyment of wholesome pleasurers. The climax of each convention is the final banquet. There, all challenges of the previous sessions having been resolved, national officers, delegates, collegians, alumnae, and guests in their best attire assemble at handsomely decorated tables. At each setting is an appropriate convention momento, a gift for each. Feasting, toasting, and distributing honors carry the Sigmas toward the midnight hours. Always reluctant to end the magic of the evening, all know tomorrow ends the time of togetherness.
Tri Sigma has, from the first, consciously attempted to bring individual chapters, through their representatives, into close touch with the work of national officers. Through careful management, the national treasury has been able to generously supplement expenses of the chapter delegates.
Consistently, Tri Sigma has chosen capable women as national leaders. Victories within and without the organization are due in large measure to the Sigma Sisters who have demonstrated faith both in themselves and each other.
